VAT Exemption on Science-related Services

China will exempt natural museums, public science and technology museums, meteorological observatories, planetariums, seismic stations, and institutions affiliated with universities and scientific research institutions from import duty and value added tax (VAT) from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025. Audiovisual goods (hard drives or broadcasting rights), scientific films equipment, software, exhibitions, and other related things are included in the exemption. The imported materials must be for self-consumption and cannot be manufactured domestically in order to qualify for the exemption. 

Effective date: 1 January 2021
